Starting a web presence

By Jeffrey Romano of Clever Solutions Ltd

If you are new to web promotion, you are probably unaware of the huge number of promotional tools that are available both on and off-line. The Internet can be a marketers’ heaven, as well as a marketers’ hell. Although there are a multitude of ways to conduct promotion, the amount of competition that there can be is alarming. What is more, competition is always increasing!

Naturally, the first step to promoting yourself online is to setup an internet presence. The best way to do this is to get your own website. However, this is far from enough. The next step is getting people to visit your site, and this is where it really gets tricky (not that I’m implying that web design is a simple process).

There are three ways that people can arrive at your site. They can either arrive by typing in the URL in the address bar, through a search engine, or else through some other link pointing towards your site. If you wish to increase traffic to your site, then you must see how you can optimize each of the above. A good detail to remember is that they are all linked together. Efforts to increase direct traffic can automatically help your search engine rankings.

With regards to bettering your search engine rankings, you can find lots of information online by searching for 'SEO Tips'. Perhaps one of the most important is getting other sites to link to yours. This acts as a ‘vote of confidence’ for your site; a recommendation to search engines that your site is trustworthy. There are too many SEO tips to implement to start listing each of them here. Fortunately, you can find a number of companies which offer SEO (search engine optimization) services.

Apart from SEO, you can also use PPC (pap-per-click) campaigns to attract people to your site. The concept is very straightforward. You only pay for clicks to your site and not for ad impressions. So if you had 1000 impressions of your ad, but just 1 click, you only pay for that click. The price varies according to the keyword you're using.

This is all just a small taster of what one needs to do to begin getting people to a website. If you are looking for getting some serious traffic, then you would have to implement other strategies too, however, that is beyond the scope of this article. I hope this acted as a good taster of developing a web presence.
